Andre Cruz & Chris Lujan
Bay Area Soul With a Heavy Heart—Andre Cruz and Chris Lujan are
“The Real Thing”! Dishing up their own unique recipe of fuzz-heavy,
groove-infused, crooning sweet soul and funk that’ll either lay you out
with a heavy heart or have you shaking what yo’ mama gave ya!
French Cassettes
The album title for French Cassettes’ new album Benzene—is neither an allusion to the dangerous fossil fuel byproduct, nor is it a nod to the anti-anxiety drug Benzos, but rather a twist on Huerta’s family nickname, ‘Benz’. “I wish I had a better explanation,” Huerta admits. “I guess I should have Googled it first.”
The self-deprecation is classic Benz, as is this crossing of the wires between the flippant and the deeply meaningful. It’s one reason the San Francisco band’s third album holds up so well to repeated listens. Even when influences like The Magnetic Fields and The Beach Boys peek through, Huerta’s lyrical aesthetic is his own, and Benzene is packed to the gills with funny, memorable one-liners that take a twist for the heartbreaking. “My mother’s mother talks in comic sans,” he sings. “I will never not love her. I wish there were more emails to read.”
Their last album, Rolodex, was a painstaking six years in the making, with perfectionist tendencies, anxiety and grief all playing roles in the delay. On Benzene — recorded and produced with the band’s cofounder Mackenzie Bunch and drummer Rob Mills — they have let their proverbial hair down. And while the album bears evidence of a band more comfortable both taking risks and taking it easy, they still never miss an opportunity to do something interesting. Melodically, production-wise, lyrically: There is always room to add another hook, a new harmony, a strange sound, or a little secret handshake of a lyric.
Plovver
Plovver is the noise baby of Brooks Dierker – producer, actor/model and overall surf bum based in Bolinas, CA. Dierker writes songs about his adventures through life, often drawing on his experiences of treading through the (foolish) waters of love. Since 2012, he has been cajoling, harassing and persuading other Bay Area musicians (who are well above his pay grade) to perform songs about dropping acid at a rodeo, falling in love with go-go dancers, and trying to remember to focus on the good in people.
In 2017, Dierker built The Rig, a mobile stage for hire with a focus on elevating local musicians and building community. In 2019, Real Neato Music Festival was first held in the Redwoods on the Russian River with the help of a small group of like minded friends and has been going strong ever since.
His musical inspirations range from Willie Nelson to The Clash, John Prine to Destroyer. Each live performance is a display of a man who wears his heart on the sleeve of a white shirt he can’t seem to keep from getting dirty 10 minutes after putting it on.
Queentide
Queentide is an alt-indie rock collaboration that walks the line of crunchy Americana with a raw, refreshing take on 90’s post-punk. Formed in 2019, the band spent their first few months rehearsing on their Santa Barbara front porch, coining a genre that would eventually define their sound: Porch Rock.
Queentide can be found playing shows all along the US west coast, though will always call the California central coast their home.
Rose Paradise
Rose Paradise enlivens West Coast folk rock. Loyal to the sweet sound of her hometown: Bolinas, California, the honky-tonk energy of Nashville country, and the (recently-encountered) gritty truths of New York City, Paradise sings for the survival of Americana. The artist’s songs evoke nostalgia as music should. Her lyrics so honest, they prod at the hearts of each audience member without exception.
The tangible chemistry of Paradise’s band, in unity with her distinctively rich voice will take you on a ride through the country and straight to the sea.
The California chanteuse is poised for her biggest year yet, with her debut album “Over The Hill” having been released in April of 2025.
Sweet Lew
Sweet Lew is an artist based in the Richmond District of San Francisco. He brings some of that Chicano Southwest Soul in his voice, dancing fingertips providing palm-muted melodies, singing of poverty, anti capitalism, kimchi, immigration, racism, heart break, and most of all radical soul love.
Sweet Lew is a man of the people and a real chingón.
